Google guitar doodle recording photos

The Google doodle celebrating Les Paul is live today! It was a big team effort, programmed and designed by Kristopher Hom, Joey Hurst, Ryan Germick, and myself.

I recorded the guitar sounds for it a while back in my apartment. Took some quick photos while I was doing it. I like knowing that the sounds were recorded in a simple home setup. I’m generally into DIY.

By the way, yesterday I made up a few quick songs while biting my nails waiting for it to launch: Happy car commercial, brooding teenager, bossanova vacation music, mellow indie rock thing, thoughtful movie music, 50′s diner jukebox.

Update: I wrote a longer article about the Les Paul doodle, thinking about how it relates to folk music, oral tradition, classical notation, and more.

Could it please stay there for a few more days? or even better, forever! I really really love it! thnx
And I’m not the only one, actually lots of people on facebook are discusing it too, pleeease???
what about putting it beside the daily google logo? then you could see all others, but still “play the guitar” on this absolutely amazing doodle..!
    Please… Thank you

I had a vague memory of seeing Crayong and Conductor a while ago. When I saw GOOG’s logo today it didn’t register immediately, but after plucking those strings for a while I had a semi-aha moment. They sounded and acted like something I had seen before. All I can say is wow. Love it almost as much as Conductor.

  9. Hey! How did you create the logo? What programming tools did you use?

    Thanks! It was pretty great!

It’s built in Javascript, triggering Flash only for the audio in the background. The strings are drawn and animated in HTML5 canvas for new browsers. For older browsers Kris Hom used PNG’s in different states.

Alexander: Thank you … thank you very much for leaving the doodle on the guitar. I hope to stay forever! THANKS!

nice songs !! my favorites: thoughtful movie music; happy car commercial

question: it seems like there’s a slight delay in the attack. Is that a browser issue ? (I use chrome ) Or did you have that issue recording also?

    also, I notice that when it’s in playback mode, and you go to another window, the speed reduces to like 1/4 speed — same tone, but v . . e . . r . . y . . s . . l . . o . . w . . . not a problem obviously – no fix required — just letting you know as an fyi ….
